Teens experiencing grief will have access to another support program starting in March offered by Airdrie and District Hospice Society. Designed for youth aged 14 to 16 years old, the Grief Support Program for Teens follows curriculum from Rainbows for All Children Canada, an organization that specializes in developing curriculum and training facilitators for children experiencing loss.
Two facilitators who have been trained to assist children and youth with appropriate coping mechanisms as they process their grief will be leading the program for teens in Airdrie and the surrounding area.
“This program responds to a very important need among youth in Airdrie,” said Lynda Hemsworth, Vice President of Airdrie and District Hospice Society. “Bereavement is difficult at any point in life, but when teenagers experience loss, it can be quite intense. We know that the challenges with Covid-19 have been very tough on teenagers and, for those experiencing a loss, that's compounded.”
One-hour sessions will be conducted via Zoom on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:00 pm beginning March 16th and running until June 1st. The program has been funded by AltaLink through proceeds from its 2020 Birdies for Kids fundraiser at the annual Shaw Charity Classic Pro Golf Tournament.
Those interested in the free Grief Support Program for Teens may register or contact the Society for more information by emailing contact@airdriehospice.ca or by calling 403-880-0420. Permission from a parent or guardian is required to participate.

Airdrie and District Hospice Society is hosting an online comedy night and auction this February to bring some laughter and hope to our community. The comedy event, Humour for Hospice, features Gemini Award winning comedian & Just for Laughs writer/performer Jebb Fink on February 14, 2021 at 7 pm. Fink will entertain guests on a special “night in” from the comfort and safety of their own homes.
Proceeds from the event will go towards enabling the Society to continue to offer all its programs at no cost. It is also raising funds to support future hospice palliative care beds in our community.
“We planned this virtual social gathering to bring a little light and laughter into people’s lives at a time when they may be feeling very lonely and isolated,” said Lise Blanchette, executive director of the hospice society. “We hope that getting some hearty laughs together will lift spirits while helping some of the most vulnerable people in our community.”
Humour for Hospice will be preceded by a two-week long online auction where participants can bid on items in a silent auction style. Running from February 1st to the 14th, the auction will feature a wide variety of items generously provided by local businesses and individuals.
Auction items include artwork, hockey memorabilia, gift baskets, and gift certificates from a variety of local restaurants and businesses.
